Andy Samberg might be the SNL It-boy when it comes to writing skits and creating digital shorts, but lord does this unfunny “Hot Rod” trailer look painful, and we don’t mean the innumerable pratfalls in lieu of real jokes. Will Arnett plays… G.o.b once again (cluessly awed by the mundane), red-head hottie Isla Fischer reprises her “Wedding Crashers” squeaky clean, cute-girl role and Samberg gets laughs by… sticking on a moustache?
The film does feature “All The Real Girls” Bust-Ass (Danny McBride), who’s ostensibly on track to become the new comedy sidekick du jour, but that remains only inappreciably of note. Songs featured in the “comedy” that looks like an extended lameduck riff on a marginally funny SNL-skit include, Europe’s The Final Countdown,” the Hives’, “See Through Head,” and the short-lived dance-punkers Test Icicles’ “Circle. Square. Triangle.”
