Adam Wingard Tapped To Make Another Monsterverse Movie For Legendary Pictures

Godzilla Vs. Kong” has marched to $406 million worldwide so far, which is pretty damn good if you consider, we’re still in a pandemic, and many North American viewers experienced the movie at home on HBO Max. So, what’s the encore? For Legendary Pictures, it’s bringing back “Godzilla Vs. Kong” director Adam Wingard for another installment of the Monsterverse (which quashes any rumors that Legendary’s deal with Japan’s Toho Studios is over).

THR reports that Legendary is already in talks with Wingard for more. What’s the direction? “We have a number of ideas for more movies,” Josh Grode, the CEO of Legendary Entertainment, recently said, and one of the ideas being kicked around internally apparently is a “Son of Kong” storyline. If a deal closes, Wingard would be the first filmmaker to return to the monster fold since 2014’s “Godzilla” began Legendary’s partnership with a $524 million global gross.

Right now, there’s no timetable, and Wingard is busy for the foreseeable future. Next up is a Face/Off” sequel/reimagining, and then he also has a live-action adaptation of the Saturday morning cartoon, Thundercats” in the works. If both those come to fruition, it could be years until Wingard’s version of another Monsterverse film comes to fruition. However, with multiple ideas in the works, that’s not to say Legendary hasn’t already engaged several filmmakers for where the Monsterverse could go next.

While ‘GVK’ was generally well-received, not everyone loved the monster smash-em-up. Our critics (and Editor-In-Chief) said the “cool shit” action set pieces ultimately couldn’t save the convoluted Titans clashing Monsterverse film but also wasn’t massively negative on it either.

The question now: can “Godzilla Vs. Kong” grow worldwide to outgross “Godzilla” and that $524 million gross? It’s hard to say, but if a pandemic-era blockbuster can outperform a regular days feature, that does bode very well for the franchise’s health.
