'Eternals': Gemma Chan & Barry Keough Join Marvel's Latest Cosmic Superhero Team

It might be a first for the Marvel universe: an actor who may end up playing two different parts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Crazy Rich Asian” star Gemma Chan had a relatively small role as Minn-Erva, a Kree Starforce officer in “Captain Marvel” alongside Brie Larson. Now, Variety reports that Chan is being tapped to play a role in Marvel’s cosmic immortal’s movie, “Eternals.”

Now while most of the trades are unsure of whether or not, Chan is playing a new character or not, all signs point to yes. First off, Minn-Erva basically died in “Captain Marvel” (though you know, comic book movies always find a workaround if they want to) which is set in the ‘90s, so that doesn’t totally discount a before appearance. However, more importantly, the Hollywood Reporter is claiming Chan is being tapped to play the lead or one of the leads of the movie, and that would make it incredibly unlikely for Minn-Erva to be in that part.

That would likely mean she’s playing the uncast Sersi or Karen, two lead ‘Eternals’ characters that fans have been speculating over for months. Marvel isn’t saying, but it seems pretty obvious that the company really likes Chan, she was hidden under a lot of blue paint and make-up in “Captain Marvel,” and could easily get away with playing another part looking more like herself.

Additionally, also joining the cast is “Chernobyl” actor Barry Keoghan, perhaps best remembered for playing the psycho kid in “Killing Of a Sacred Deer.” His role is currently unknown. They will both join a cast that already includes Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, and Kumail Nanjiani.

Based on the 1976 comic book series created by Jack Kirby, “Eternals” will be directed by “The Rider” filmmaker Chloe Zhao, and centers on celestial immortals that will live within the cosmic, outer space setting of the MCU (“Guardians of The Galaxy,” “Captain Marvel”).
