'Frankie' Trailer: Isabelle Huppert Leads Ira Sachs' Latest Cannes Bound Drama

Indie filmmaker Ira Sachs is showing a ton of confidence in his new film, “Frankie.” Before premiering at 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Sony Pictures Classics loved it so much they acquired all rights in North America, Eastern Europe (including CIS), Scandinavia, the Middle East, South Africa, Spain, India and more as soon as they saw it, weeks before the festival (which kicks off next week).

Written by Mauricio Zaccharias and Sachs, “Frankie” features an excellent cast in Isabelle Huppert, Marisa Tomei, Greg Kinnear, Jérémie Rénier, and Brendan Gleeson.

Here’s the official synopsis, but in short it seems to be a seaside vacation drama, but it comes with a life-altering twist (seen in the trailer, but not the synopsis):

Three generations of a European family come together in the fabled town of Sintra, Portugal, for one last vacation before the family matriarch faces the next, and last, chapter of her life. Over the course of one crisp October day, the fairy tale setting brings about everyone’s most romantic impulses, revealing both cracks between them, as well as unexpected depth of feeling.

“Frankie” marks a reunion of sorts for Sony Pictures Classics as it is their third film with Ira Sachs, following “Married Life” and “Love Is Strange,” as well as their third collaboration with the film’s producer Ben Saïd, following “Elle” and “Carnage.”

“Ira Sachs once again proves himself to be a major American director with FRANKIE. We are thrilled to be back together with Ira, producer Ben Saïd, and the superb cast,” said Sony Pictures Classics in a statement released earlier this year.

Frankie is Sachs first film in Cannes competition, previous films have mostly premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, so perhaps this is a step into some bigger shoes. The Cannes 2019 Film Festival runs from May 14-May 25. Watch the trailer below.
