It's Getting Soundtracky Out There: Stereolab, New Pornographers, Joy Division; More

There’s a lot of soundtrack news out there these days and within the last week lots of people are doing their best to start columns, create weekly features and report as much soundtrack related news as possible. Wonder where that came from all of a sudden? Anyhoo…

Zach Braff apparently wanted to use the New Pornographers’ “Miracle Drug” in the “Last Kiss” (a movie he starred in and curated the soundtrack). “It ended up not working,” lead Porno Carl Newman told Stuff magazine. “But part of me was thinking, will this be Garden State: Part Two? Then he ended up using the song in [the practically straight to DVD, flop .ed] ‘The Ex,’ but it was too little, too late. There’s only one chance for the lightning strike of Garden State.” [Stereogum/Stuff]

Braff’s current “What I’m listening to” playlist features the New Pornographers (natch) and other umm… winning and bleeding edge tunes by Marc Broussard, Gavin DeGraw, Cake, Blind Melon and Pete Yorn.

To coincide with the upcoming Joy Division-biopic, “Control,” (a.k.a to capitalize on the impending renewed interest) the band’s label will reissue their catalogue (Unknown Pleasures, Closer, Still) with bonus tracks and presumably other bells and whistles. [Gigwise]

Longtime collaborators and mutual admirers, Stereolab visionary Tim Gane and the High Llamas magnate Sean O’Hagan have composed the score to the new french comedy, “La Vie d’Artiste.” Directed by Marc Fitoussi, the film “follows the life of three separate artists” (wow, informative, right?), and the soundtrack – a double disc effort – will arrive on September 10 in the UK ( with a release to follow in the U.S. later this year.)
