The Section Quartet Score Drew Barrymore's 'Whip It'

You’ll recall a couple months ago that we reported on musician Mark Mothersbaugh’s own admission that Drew Barrymore had hired, then fired him from his music gig on her teen roller derby comedy, “Whip It,” starring Ellen Page.

Fans of Mothersbaugh were put off, but the Devo instrumentalist seemed to laugh off the whole event. Life moves on apparently.

OK, then so who did she hire as a replacement? According to the credits for the film at the Toronto Film Festival, she’s tapped the L.A. string group, The Section Quartet, known for their orchestral covers of popular hits from The Postal Service, Radiohead, Muse, Soundgarden, Linkin Park, Oasis, etc. etc.

The move is an interesting choice. Will we hear the familiar strains of indie and alt-rock played instrumentally in the background or will the group compose an entirely new score? Hard to say, there’s little info on their official homepage, their blog or their myspace page. Maybe they’re being secretive about it for some reason? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see. “Whip It” features Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Daniel Stern and is due in theaters October 9, just a few short weeks after it premieres in Toronto. Here’s the film’s trailer if you missed it the first time around.
