It’s been four years since “True Detective” aired on HBO, but the series returns for a fourth season, subtitled ‘Night Country’ on January 14, 2024. Creator Nic Pizzolatto couldn’t come to terms with HBO on the direction for a fourth season after season three and then parted ways with the cable channel. In his stead, filmmaker Barry Jenkins came on board as an executive producer, co-signing on an idea from acclaimed Mexican horror filmmaker Issa López. HBO went for it, and she serves as the showrunner, writer, and director.
This season stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as the two detectives, and the series is set in a fictional Alaskan town. The plot follows the investigation behind the disappearance of eight men from a research station. Reis is a former professional boxer turned actor who made her acclaimed acting debut in the thriller “Catch the Fair One.”
The series also co-stars Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, and John Hawkes.
“True Detective” generally centers around murder mysteries with a grim edge or macabre element. And that seems to be just the way Lopez likes it.
“I’m not so much of a fan of the cozy mystery,” she told Vanity Fair recently. “I like the dark, f*cked-up mystery.”
Seasons two and three of “True Detective” weren’t as acclaimed as season one, and Lopez didn’t even think a fourth season would happen. Her pitch, which lit up HBO, was creating a “dark mirror” of season one. “Where True Detective is male, and it’s sweaty, ‘Night Country’ is cold and it’s dark, and its female,” she said.
