'Crimes Of The Future' Trailer: David Cronenberg's Cannes-Bound Film Stars Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux & Kristen Stewart

Like the oracle he is, Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg told us all months ago that his next film, “Crimes Of The Future,” his first film since 2014’s “Maps To The Stars,” would likely premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and sure enough, early this morning, the film was announced as part of the Cannes Competition Official Selection.

Starring Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart, along with Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, and Don McKellar, ‘Crimes Of The Future” has the same name as a 1970 film by Cronenberg but is not a remake. Instead, Cro has made what sounds like another sci-fi body horror about transformations and mutations. What’s more, NEON film, which is releasing the movie this summer, has revealed an early teaser trailer.

Here’s the synopsis:

As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution. Cannes Competition Official Selection 2022.

A few old Cronenberg pals are working on the film, including Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore and veteran Canadian cinematographer Douglas Koch who shot McKellar’s 1998 feature, “Last Night.”

Neon says it will release “Crimes Of The Future” sometime in June 2022, and we’ll all just have to tide ourselves over with the teaser trailer for now. The teaser itself is pretty enigmatic and only reveals a few shots of the cast, but it’s Cronenberg’s first feature in eight years; we thought he was retired, and hey, welcome back, we’ll take what we can get. Watch the new teaser trailer below (plus an extended international version) and get hyped for Cannes.
