Does Werner Herzog Really Want To Channel The Spectre of 'Ghost Rider' For His 'Bad Lieutenant' Remake?

Is Werner Herzog’s remake reimagining of Abel Ferrara’s “The Bad Lieutenant,” inadvertently trying to summon the spectre of “Ghost Rider?”

Titled “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” the film, which already stars Nicolas Cage, is eyeing Eva Mendes to star alongside the aging Coppola cousin and the two of them last appeared together in the dreadful comic adaption of “Ghost Rider.” This is not a good look and does not bode well from the outside. After playing a spate of stock romantic interest roles, (“We Own The Night,” “Ghost Rider”) let’s hope she has more to chew into with this one. Herzog is supposed to start shooting in three weeks, despite very limited pre-production (which also doesn’t sound good. And oh yeah, the German director was recently arrested and handcuffed to a chair in Bangkok because of unpaid bills on “Rescue Dawn.” [Variety]

Director Louis Leterrier, who topped the box-office this weekend with The Incredible Hulk,” is eyeing the eco-action thriller “Strays.” No we did not make up the term “eco-action thriller.” Note he was time to look at other projects given that Marvel hasn’t announced a sequel to ‘Hulk’ yet. Plus Ed Norton isn’t even signed on for a sequel yet. [Hollywood Reporter]

Baby-boom scribe Lawrence Kasdan (“The Big Chill,” “Grand Canyon”) will write the screenplay to anime TV show, “Robotech.” Not that odd, he was also hired to give soul to “Raiders Of The Lost Ark,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.” [Hollywood Reporter]

Now that “Iron Man” has made him totally bankable again, Robert Downey Jr. is eyeing a shitload of roles including, Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” remake, the Hugh Hefner biopic to be directed by fauxteur Brett Ratner and most recently a pulpy sci-fi western, “Cowboys & Aliens” which is said to have franchiseability.
