First Look: Mike Mills’ 20th Century Women' With Elle Fanning, Film Opens In The U.K. In January

The fall film season is shaping up with newly announced titles that may have some Oscar chances. Some recent titles that come to mind: Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” (November 11), Tom Ford’s “Nocturnal Animals” (November 18), “Wilson” with Woody Harrelson (TBD fall), Mel Gibson‘s “Hacksaw Ridge” with Andrew Garfield (November 4), “Manchester By The Sea” with Casey Affleck (November 18) and many more to come.

We may need to add Mike Mills’ highly anticipated “20th Century Women” to the list too. Launching Films, the U.K. company that revealed the date for “Arrival” before it was officially announced by Paramount, reveal on their website that “20th Century Women” is due across the pond on January 20, 2017.

Starring Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig, Elle Fanning, Billy Crudup and Alia Shawkat, “20th Century Women” is the story of three women who explore love and freedom in Southern California during the late 1970s. Mills, who always has a sensitive and tender touch is known for the excellent indies “Thumbsucker” and “Beginners,” the latter of which won Christopher Plummer the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. Composer/arranger, Roger Neill, who has worked with Air, Beck, Stereolab, Air, Sofia Coppola, and more (including Mills) — he also arranged an killer orchestral version of Phoenix’s “Lisztomania” for “Mozart In The Jungle — is writing the score.

Given that most prestige U.K. titles released in early January or February are followed by U.S. titles that have already arrived in the fall, it’s a strong bet we’ll see “20th Century Women” women arrive sometime in November and December. The caveat is, the picture, produced by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures, has no U.S. distribution yet.

Update 6/29: A24 has announced they’ve picked up the film for release this year, and unveiled the official synopsis:

20th Century Women is a loving portrait of three remarkable women, led by Dorothea who is the devoted and iconoclastic mother of Jamie, a teenage boy.  These women, each from a different era of the 20th century, come together to help teach Jamie about life and love, sex and freedom, men and women. Set in Santa Barbara in the summer of 1979, filled with punk-rock verve, 20th Century Women takes a humorous and heartfelt look at how we figure out who we are and the many ways we create families.

Meanwhile, a few Elle Fanning fan sites have found the first photos of “20th Century Women,” and you can find those below.
