Mattel To Make Toys For James Cameron's Avatar

We’ll admit, we’re no “Avatar,” experts, but doesn’t the news that Mattel will be making toys for James Cameron’s long-awaited sci-fi film strike you as a little odd?

20th Century Fox has taped Mattel to be the master toy licensee for the epic movie, and they will create action figures and vehicles scheduled to hit retailers nationwide in October, two months in advance of the film’s release in December (for all you adult men out there who still play with action figures, sorry, collect). Hello, spoiler toys!

From what we have read, “Avatar” sounds like another futuristic “Aliens” type picture only more high-concept, in 3D and with effects that apparently have been some ten years in the making. But toys for a picture that sounds like an R-Rated experience? Sure, “Aliens” and lots of explicit films have accompanying action figures for grown men to put on their shelves, but doesn’t Mattel mostly make kids-friendly toys?

Slightly confused, yet slightly don’t care. And nerds apparently hate 20th Century Fox, but have done nothing but froth at the mouth about this one. Maybe these toys are just supposed to be more Pavlov’s dog marketing hype. [Marketsaw] BTW, even our pal Steven Soderbergh was impressed with what he saw of ‘Avatar’ when he visited the set. “I can tell you that shit was mindblowing. The shit I saw was crazy. Like, craaaazy.I I think it’s gonna be gigantic. It’s gonna be another one of those benchmarks. There’s gonna be Before that movie and After.”
