‘Frankenstein’ Trailer: Guillermo del Toro Reanimates Mary Shelley’s Classic With Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi & Mia Goth

Netflix and Guillermo del Toro are ready to bring a monster back to life. After years of anticipation, del Toro’s long-gestating adaptation of “Frankenstein” finally arrives this fall, reimagining Mary Shelley’s gothic masterpiece with a star cast led by Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth. The film will open in select theaters on October 17 before streaming globally on Netflix on November 7.

A passion project for del Toro, “Frankenstein” follows Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant yet egotistical scientist whose attempt to create life results in a tragic and terrifying creature. The film promises to balance gothic horror with the filmmaker’s signature empathy for monsters, continuing the themes that earned him an Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”

The ensemble cast includes Felix Kammerer, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Christian Convery, with Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz. Written and directed by del Toro, and produced with J. Miles Dale and Scott Stuber, the adaptation is based directly on Shelley’s 1818 novel, “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.”

Del Toro has called Shelley’s novel “one of the essential texts of my life,” and his version aims to honor its moral questions while delivering his trademark visual grandeur. After recent triumphs like “Pinocchio,” his return to gothic territory signals one of the most anticipated projects of the year.
