'Everybody Knows' Trailer: Asghar Farhadi Teams Up With Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem

Put simply, Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi is one of the greatest working filmmakers on the planet and he found some recognition in the appellation when his 2017 film “The Salesman” won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. And he did so without stepping a foot inside the Dolby Theater, refusing to attend the ceremonies due to the President Trump’s then-proposed Muslim ban. And it was his second Oscar win too, “A Separation” took the same prize in 2011. Farhadi’s latest film “Everybody Knows” is not only done, but it’s going to be the opening film of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in May.

Starring Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, and Ricardo Darin, it’s not an English-language project, but it’s certainly the most mainstream picture the Iranian director has ever made. Pedro Almodovar was once involved as an exec producer (though that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore), but Almodovar regulars Alberto Iglesias and cinematographer Jose Luis Alcaine (“Volver,” “The Skin I Live In,”) are involved. Carolina travels with her family from Buenos Aires to her native village in Spain for a celebration. What was meant to be a short visit is disrupted by unforeseen events that will completely change their lives.

The supporting cast including Bárbara Lennie, Eduard Fernández, Elvira Minguez, Ramón Barea, Carla Campra and Inma Cuesta. No U.S. date is set yet because the film has no distributors, but presumably, they’ll come knocking after Cannes. We’re thinking bidding war.
