First Look At Star Wars' 'The Mandalorian,' Taika Waititi & More Directors Revealed

Disney and Lucasfilm have unveiled the first look at “The Mandalorian” the “Star Wars” live-action series that will air on the as-of-yet-untitled streaming service of the megacorporation.

Earlier today, director/actor Jon Favreau, the series creator and brainchild, revealed the title of the show and details. Named after a race of people in the “Star Wars” universe—the same race bounty hunter Boba Fett belongs to—“The Mandalorian” is set somewhere with the thirty years between “Return Of The Jedi” and “The Force Awakens.” It will be the first “Star Wars” property that lives within that period, not including comics and books.

“After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the ‘Star Wars’ universe. ‘The Mandalorian’ is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.”

Today, on their “Star Wars” show, Lucasfilm released the first look of the show which looks like, yep, an unknown man in Mandalorian armor. That’s all we know so far.

However, StarWars.com tonight confirmed and revealed some more of the directors who will be helming episodes of the show.

They include the previously rumored Dave Filoni, who has worked on and led “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels.” Filoni is essentially the head of the animation division at Lucasfilm and this will be his first foray into live-action. He will direct the first episode of the series.

Other directors added to the line-up leading additional episodes include “Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard,Dopes” helmer Rick Famuyiwa, and Deborah Chow (“Jessica Jones”).

“The Mandalorian” will be executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. This tidbit does help us glean a bit more about the possible direction of the show as Filoni fleshed out the history, culture, and texture of the proud Mandalorian people and warriors on “Star Wars Rebels.” At this point, he knows that race best.

There have been rumors that “Game of Thrones” star Pedro Pascal will also be part of the cast, perhaps the Mandalorian himself(?), but so far that news has not been confirmed.

Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Mandalorian” or however they ultimately lay out the title, isn’t expected until 2019. The series is expected to start shooting soon so cast should soon be confirmed.
