Robert Pattinson Loves ‘Waterworld’; Talks 'High Life' "Fantasy"

The Safdie Brothers’ latest film “Good Time” is hitting theaters this weekend via A24 which means its star Robert Pattison is doing the press rounds. As the actor describes it, the crime drama derives from the “panic genre.” And indeed, it’s an electrifying piece of cinema full of sweaty terror and desperation centering on a low level criminal who robs a bank with his brother and then goes on the run for the rest of the movie. It’s stress-inducing firecracker of pure cinema, a must-see movie and Pattinson’s best performance to date (co-director Benny Safdie also co-stars and he’s amazing in the movie too).

But in a recent GQ feature, Pattison talks ahead about the future. One of those projects, said to be his next film, is a Claire Denis film called, “High Life”— though it was recently reported the Denis would shoot “Dark Glasses” with Juliette Binoche first. Regardless, “High Life” is coming, eventually. The log line is: A father and his daughter struggle to survive in deep space where they live in isolation. But it’s obviously much more complex and possibly kinky.

“It’s a lot about sexual fantasy,” he told the magazine, “and how your past intermingles, and this thing about kind of having your semen stolen from you in a spaceship and like forcibly impregnating people.” Uhh, ok. This must be the “sexual experiments on humans,” that Pattinson has described in the past when hinting at what “High Life” was about.

Meanwhile, at one point in the interview, as the writer fishes a little bit, they ask for one example “where a single remark or bit of gossip” derailed an entire movie (seemingly alluding to “Twilight” and all the gossip that has surrounded the actor). Pattinson’s answer is unexpected.

“Like [Kevin Costner‘s] ‘Waterworld,’ for instance,” he said. “It’s one of the greatest movies ever made and everyone said it was bad. And for years everyone was like, ‘This is a terrible movie.’ And now people are watching it and the veil is being taken away.”

The writer says she is temporarily speechless and this isn’t apparently a joke (though he’s been telling some tall tales of late that have gotten him into hot water). I feel the same way. For a guy that adores David Cronenberg, Claire Denis and many other modern auteurs, he sure has… eclectic taste. Maybe we’ll find out he’s a huge fan of “Battlefield Earth” too.

For more Robert Pattinson, just go see “Good Time.” It’s one of the best movies of the year so far and it opens this weekend, Friday, August 11. And lastly, below, another Robert Pattinson treat.
