Henry Cavill Reportedly In Talks To Reprise Role As Superman, But Not In A 'Man Of Steel' Sequel

Look up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s potentially Henry Cavill suiting up again as the Man of Steel. While in 2019, a few short months before he decided not to cameo in “Shazam!” that Cavill was done as Warner Bros. Superman, things are apparently changing. Just a few short days after appearing on Zack Snyder’s “Man Of Steel” Vero livestream, where the filmmaker revealed his long-awaited cut of “Justice League” would finally surface on HBO Max in 2021, Deadline report that Cavill is in talks with Warner Bros. to reprise his role as the Metropolis Marvel.

However, be warned fans, a “Man Of Steel” sequel is not in development at WB. Instead, the studio is weighing its options on how Supes can return to the DCEU, and it sounds like that could be a slow re-introduction via cameos or small supporting roles in upcoming DC superhero movies like “Shazam 2,” Dwayne Johnson’s “Black Adam” or “Aquaman 2,” all of which have yet to shoot.

Deadline stresses—for fans that build out hope and offer hilarious conspiracy theories like Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” is being canceled, and Robert Pattison is being fired (false, obviously)—that Cavill will not appear in Reeves next film. Nor will he appear in movies like “Wonder Woman 1984,” and James Gunn’s “Suicide Squad,” which are mainly either done or in the can and in post-production.

It sounds like Cavill is currently hammering out a deal to return as the Man of Tomorrow, but how and when is totally unclear. If anything, this will give more credence to the fan conspiracy theory and hope that following Snyder’s “Justice League” cut he will then be allowed to make his intended “Justice League 2,” “Justice League 3” and beyond, but that’s extremely unlikely, especially given one part of their theory—Zack Snyder directing “Man Of Steel 2” has already been nixed (dream on that Affleck is returning as Batman while you’re at it). Update: Variety says Cavill will not be suiting up for reshoots of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League.”

Regardless of the Snyder Cut, the new tracks as Warner Bros. seem to be making an about-face with its Kryptonian plans. With Cavill gone, or at least at a contractual stalemate with the studio around the time of “Shazam,” the studio was said to be looking into pivoting to “Supergirl” instead.

However, after the failure of the all-female superheroines DCEU movie “Birds Of Prey,” reports surfaced that WB had cooled on Supergirl and abandoned that plan. So, it makes sense to return to the big red cape instead. Stay tuned for more when it surfaces. [Deadline]
