Has director Edward Berger finally cracked the story for another “Jason Bourne” movie? Actor Matt Damon teased that it may be the case in a new interview on the “Dan Patrick Show” that premiered yesterday.
“Edward Berger is this phenomenal director, and he really wants to do it, and so I’ve been talking to him, and he’s sent me kind of the first act,” Damon told Patrick. “It’s really good, so I’m very hopeful that it can happen.” That certainly builds upon the comments Damon made last week on ESPN’s “The Rick Eisen Show,” when he said that he and Berger “have a line of sight on how to do” another “Bourne” film. Berger’s name has been attached to a new sequel in the franchise since late 2023, but updates on the project going into active development have remained scarce since then. Now it appears a new “Bourne” may be inching towards fruition after all.
Damon’s other comments about a new “Bourne” film on the “Dan Patrick Show” echoed similar ones he made on Eisen’s. “Unless it can kind of fit with that first three we did, unless it can be of that caliber, don’t poke the bear,” the actor said about the quality of sequel he’d like to make with Berger. “But if we really feel like we’ve got a shot at doing something, great, I’m all in. I love that character, it’s been an incredible part of my life. I’d love to do it again.”
Last week on “The Rick Eisen Show,” Damon reiterated the same sentiment about the first three “Bourne” films, while also explaining the spy character is “not built like a James Bond, where every movie is its own mission.” “It’s a linear story,” he continued, “It makes it more challenging to do a sequel where you’re giving people what they want, but also enough new stuff. You know what I mean? It’s a tricky one.”
And the right continuation of Jason Bourne’s story has indeed been a tough nut to crack for Damon. Back in 2023, The Playlist published a story that Damon, “Bourne” producer Frank Marshall, and “The Bourne Supremacy” screenwriter Scott Z. Burns spent five years developing a sequel idea to no avail. Then more recently, “Black Doves” writer Joe Barton tried his hand at a “Bourne” script, but it appears that Berger and Damon won’t move forward with that one. Maybe this new idea Berger sent to Damon recently will be the right choice.
But does the world need another “Jason Bourne” movie? After all, it’s now been ten years since the last installment in the franchise was in theaters; a box office success, sure, but one with meager critical acclaim. With recent action roles like “The Rip,” “The Odyssey,” and the upcoming “Animals,” Damon, now 55, has shown he’s more than up for it physically. And there will always be an audience for action-packed CIA thrillers like the “Bourne” films, especially one directed by someone like Berger. If Berger’s next film, “The Riders,” in theaters later this year, is a hit, then it’s safe to expect he’ll fast-track his “Jason Bourne” sequel as his next project.
