'Clerk' Trailer: New Doc Charts The Rise Of Indie Filmmaker/Geek Icon Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith is a go-to name among indie filmmaking and comic book pop-culture. But it didn’t start out that way for the director. The new documentary “Clerk” examines Smith’s entire career through the groundbreaking “Clerks” to executive producer on Netflix’s “Masters of the Universe: Revelation.” The film also delves into the life of this intriguing cinematic figure — who notably survived a heart attack in 2018.

Director Malcolm Ingram puts together a comprehensive project — relying on those who know Smith best to tell the story. Interviews with not only peers in the field, but friends and family, provide an all-embracing picture of what life is like for the formidable multi-hyphenate. In addition to Smith, “Clerk” features conversations with Scott Mosier, Jason Mewes, Stan Lee, Justin Long, Penn Jillette, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon. Long proves to be an interesting choice for the documentary, drawing attention to the cult horror film “Tusk.” The late Stan Lee also stands out as a sentimental choice for casual viewers and Smith fans alike.

For Ingram, the current project hits closer to home. Smith is more than a documentary subject, he’s a colleague and friend. The director met up with Ingram during a writing assignment and the pair soon teamed up — with Matthew Gissing — to create the 1996 film “Drawing Flies.” Since then, Ingram has been a presence in Smith’s podcasting world and worked with the filmmaker on various projects.

The documentary’s official synopsis:

“An extensive all access documentary examining the life and career of indie filmmaking icon Kevin Smith. Featuring never before seen interviews with friends, family, filmmaking peers, and icons of the film, comedy and comic worlds.”

Clerk” is produced by the film’s director, Ingram, along with Craig Fleming. The film premieres on November 23 on digital services. Get your first look at the project’s trailer below:
