'Grand Army' Teaser: Odessa A'zion Stars In Netflix's Upcoming Teen Drama Series

The teen drama somehow reinvents itself with each passing decade. Netflix’sGrand Army” seeks to tell the stories of a generation facing challenges that go well beyond usual tropes. In the series, set over nine episodes, Brooklyn high school students face a world filled with increasingly difficult challenges.

Katie Cappiello’sSlut: The Play” acts as the basis for the project. Debuting in 2013, this critical look at sexuality and rape among teenagers received praised from activist Gloria Steinem. Along with Cappiello, Josh Donen, Nicolette Donen, Elizabeth Kling, Beau Willimon, and Jordan Tappis produce. Willimon is an already recognizable name whose work with the series “House of Cards” helped Netflix transition into the realm of original programming. A playwright himself, the producer is well aware of the challenges that come with adapting theater for television. The series also relies on a talented group of directors; So Yong Kim, Darnell Martin, Tina Mabry, Silas Howard, and Clement Virgo all helm Season 1 episodes.

Lead actress Odessa A’zion takes on the difficult role of Joey Del Marco. In the play and subsequent series, this character’s traumas lead the way for the story to unfold. Best known for “Fam” and “Nashville,” A’zion assumes the task with appropriate sensitivity. She’s joined by an outstanding cast of young performers. Brittany Adebumola and Odley Jean are both rising talents, racking up their first on-screen credits with this project. Each actress has built a reputation in the East Coast theater community, something that makes them perfect to adapt their pivotal characters to streaming viewers. Another name to watch out for is Amir Bageria. Before this series, the actor was seen on “Degrassi: Next Class”. The experience in teen based fare could prove to be an asset as he approaches the material.
