What will you do to survive? The new film “Vesper” presents a scenario steeped in survival at all costs. Vesper, a 13-year-old girl navigating an uncertain future, is at the story’s center. This adventure — taking place on Earth post-ecosystem collapse — sees the heroine defying the odds to keep her ill father safe. Everything changes thanks to a mysterious stranger, their devious neighbor, and a thrilling search for the truth.

Raffiella Chapman stars as the title character; while young, this performer has already proven herself with roles on series such as “Law & Order: UK” and films including “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.” Richard Blake — known for portraying imposing characters — plays Vesper’s father. It’s a part that allows the actor to venture out of his usual fare. “The Alienist” actress Rosy McEwan takes on the role of Camellia, the interloper, with a host of questions behind her. Eddie Marsan rounds out the cast as the menacing neighbor Jonas.

The project hails from Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper; co-directors, the pair wrote “Vesper” with Brian Clark. Prior to the film, Buozyte and Samper drew praise for their “ABCs of Death 2” contribution — “K is for Knell.” The sci-fi-inspired segment features many of the themes found in “Vesper,” as a young girl faces alien elements.

The film’s official synopsis:

After the collapse of Earth’s ecosystem, Vesper, a 13-year-old girl struggling to survive with her paralyzed Father, meets a mysterious woman with a secret that forces Vesper to use her wits, strength, and bio-hacking abilities to fight for the possibility of a future.

Survival is far from a sure thing in “Vesper.” It premieres as part of the 56th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival’s Crystal Globe Competition. IFC Films is set to release the film in US theaters and on VOD on September 30. Check out the trailer below.
