Nearly 30 years after the original took on a second life as a cult favorite, Warner Bros. has unveiled the first teaser for “Practical Magic 2,” bringing Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman back as Sally and Gillian Owens for a sequel that heads to theaters on September 18, 2026.
The new film picks up with the Owens sisters pulled back into another round of family trouble when a mysterious figure, played by Lee Pace, arrives in their small New England town. The story also centers on Sally’s daughters in the sequel, pushing the Owens mythology toward the next generation rather than treating this as a pure nostalgia run.
Returning cast members Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are back as the aunts, while Joey King, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod join the ensemble. Behind the camera, Susanne Bier directs from a screenplay by returning original writer Akiva Goldsman and “Succession” writer Georgia Pritchett, with Bullock and Kidman also producing.
That setup is probably the right one for this movie. The original lasted because it carried more than its witchy-romance hook. It had a bruised, autumnal streak to it—sisterhood, grief, bad men, inherited damage—and that odd blend kept audiences hanging on long after 1998. A sequel that widens the family and keeps the curse in motion feels smarter than pretending the appeal was ever just cottage-core iconography and midnight cocktails. The source material still comes from Alice Hoffman’s world, but the movie’s real job is to reconnect with the emotional weather that made the first one stick.
