Ryan Gosling To Star In Secret Daniels Film At Universal; Oscar-Winning Duo Finally Set Long-Awaited Follow-Up To ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’

After a few years of silence and development delays, the Daniels (“Swiss Army Man”) are back in business—and they’ve secured a major movie star to anchor whatever comes next.

Ryan Gosling (“Project Hail Mary,” “Barbie”) is set to lead an untitled event film for Universal Pictures, reuniting the industry with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert—the filmmaking duo collectively known as Daniels, who broke through in a seismic way with their dazzling sci-fi drama “Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Details, unsurprisingly, are being kept tightly under wraps. But the project is being positioned as a large-scale “event film,” marking the Daniels’ first feature since their 2022 Oscar juggernaut, which swept seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

That long gap hasn’t been for lack of trying. The pair signed a five-year deal with Universal in 2022. Still, their follow-up has taken time to materialize, with earlier release plans pushed back as the filmmakers wrestled with scope, tone, and how to follow something as singular—and culturally dominant—as “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”

Gosling, meanwhile, is coming in super hot at the moment. His latest sci-fi effort, “Project Hail Mary” (directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo behind “The Lego Movie” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”), just opened to strong numbers and positive reviews, quickly becoming one of the biggest launches of 2026 so far. That momentum makes him a natural fit for a project that Universal is clearly positioning as a major theatrical play.

There’s still no official synopsis, no supporting cast, and no clear sense of tone—though if history is any guide, expect something that bends genre, tenor, and emotional registers all at once. The Daniels don’t exactly do small or predictable, and their genre ambitions generally scale off the charts.

As for timing, the film is currently dated for a late 2027 release window, landing squarely in the Thanksgiving corridor—a slot typically reserved for prestige tentpoles or awards hopefuls.

In the meantime, Gosling isn’t slowing down. Beyond “Project Hail Mary,” he’s also attached to “Star Wars: Starfighter” (directed by Shawn Levy), which is slated to hit theaters in May 2027, signaling a clear pivot into larger franchise and event territory. [via Deadline]
