It’s been more than a decade since “22 Jump Street” turned the very idea of franchise extension into one of its best jokes, ending with a rapid-fire parade of fake sequels, spinoffs, toys, video games, and increasingly absurd follow-ups. Now, in suitably meta fashion, the long-delayed next chapter may actually be skipping “23 Jump Street” altogether.

According to Deadline, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube are in talks to return for “24 Jump Street,” a new sequel currently in the works at Sony Pictures. Tatum and Hill would reprise their roles as undercover cops Jenko and Schmidt, while Ice Cube would return as their eternally furious captain, Dickson.
The first two films, “21 Jump Street” and “22 Jump Street,” turned what could have been a forgettable TV-to-film reboot into one of the sharper studio comedy franchises of the 2010s, largely by making the reboot machinery part of the joke. Phil Lord and Chris Miller directed both installments, helping establish the series’ self-aware tone before moving on to become two of Hollywood’s busiest producers. They are not expected to direct this new installment but remain involved as producers, alongside Neal H. Moritz.
This time, Rodney Rothman is set to direct. Rothman co-wrote “22 Jump Street” and later co-directed and co-wrote Sony’s Oscar-winning animated smash “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.” He also co-wrote the current “24 Jump Street” script with Hill and Meghan Malloy.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, and the title alone raises the obvious question: what happened to “23 Jump Street”? Given the franchise’s entire comic premise—mocking sequels, remakes, and studio IP logic while participating in all of the above—it may be the joke. “22 Jump Street” famously ended with a montage of imaginary next chapters, including “23 Jump Street: Medical School” and “24 Jump Street: Foreign Exchange.” However, it is unclear whether the new film will borrow from that gag or go in a different direction.
A third “Jump Street” movie has been stuck in various stages of development for years. At one point, Sony explored a crossover with “Men In Black” under the title “MIB 23,” a very 2010s act of franchise alchemy that never made it to production. Since then, Tatum and Hill have both periodically expressed interest in returning, with Tatum saying in 2024 that a third film had one of the best scripts he had read for a sequel, but that it remained caught up in industry logistics.
No production start date or release date has been announced.
