‘Normal’ Trailer: Bob Odenkirk Plays A Substitute Sheriff Who Learns The Town Is Anything But

The latest Bob Odenkirk action-adjacent collaboration is lining up as a left-turn, kinetic neo-Western: “Normal,” directed by Ben Wheatley (“Free Fire,” “High-Rise”) and built from a screenplay by Derek Kolstad (“John Wick”) with story credit shared by Kolstad and Odenkirk. The film is set to open in theaters nationwide on April 17, 2026.

Normal” stars Odenkirk as Sheriff Ulysses, an unassuming substitute sheriff who lands a provisional posting in a small Midwestern town that looks, at first glance, like a quiet reset. The official synopsis suggests he is trying to put distance between himself and both marital strain and recent “moral injuries” from the job—hoping the sleepy pace of Normal will do what the badge can’t and give him room to breathe.

That illusion doesn’t last. A botched bank robbery ruptures the town’s calm, and Ulysses’ response to the crime inadvertently exposes something darker sitting underneath the place’s postcard surface. The setup positions the film as a pressure-cooker unraveling—one lawman, one “routine” incident, and a secret that turns the town’s name into a joke Ulysses can’t ignore.
