There are a few names in music history that still bend time and gravity like Michael Jackson. The King of Pop didn’t just dominate charts — he redefined what global stardom looked like, turning rhythm, image, and movement into myth. Now his story returns to the big screen with “Michael,” the upcoming biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, which is set to open in theaters on April 24, 2026.
Led by Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s real-life nephew making his feature debut, the film traces Michael Jackson’s life from the precocious talent who led the Jackson Five to the visionary solo artist who pursued perfection at all costs. According to the official synopsis, “Michael” offers “a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before,” blending his defining performances with the intimate moments that shaped his journey — the genius, ambition, and contradictions that created a cultural phenomenon.
Here’s the official synopsis:
MICHAEL is the cinematic portrayal of the life and legacy of one of the most influential artists the world has ever known. The film tells the story of Michael Jackson’s life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world. Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before. This is where his story begins.
Produced by Graham King, John Branca, and John McClain under GK Films, the project has an estimated budget of $155 million and is being released domestically by Lionsgate, with Universal Pictures handling international distribution. Reports suggest the film may ultimately be released in two parts, though that plan has not been officially confirmed by the studio.
The ensemble cast features Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Miles Teller, Laura Harrier, Kat Graham, Larenz Tate, Derek Luke, and Juliano Krue Valdi. With Fuqua behind the camera and Logan — the Oscar-nominated writer of “Gladiator” and “The Aviator” — crafting the screenplay, “Michael” is poised to merge spectacle and introspection in telling the story of one of the most transformative figures in pop culture.
