After conquering the box office in 2023, Mario and Peach are headed for the cosmos. Illumination and Nintendo have released the first trailer and poster for “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” the highly anticipated sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. “The Galaxy Awaits,” the tagline declares—and this time, the beloved plumber isn’t just jumping across kingdoms but across planets. The animated sequel reunites much of the creative team behind the first film, including directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and screenwriter Matthew Fogel. Returning to voice their roles are Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Newly announced additions to the ensemble include Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., marking their debut in the Nintendo cinematic universe.

The film will once again be produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo, continuing their partnership that turned the Mushroom Kingdom into one of cinema’s biggest modern franchises. Composer Brian Tyler also returns to score the film, promising another energetic mix of orchestral bombast and nostalgic game motifs.

While plot specifics remain under wraps, the trailer teases an expansive interstellar setting inspired by the hit “Super Mario Galaxy” games, complete with cosmic landscapes, Luma companions, and a story that appears to push the heroes far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom. If the first film was a nostalgic romp, this sequel looks poised to expand the series’ scale—and cement Illumination’s growing Nintendo universe.

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and is set for a worldwide release on April 3, 2026.
