Milo Ventimiglia Set For HBO Max’s Police Version Of ‘The Pitt’ Pilot ‘American Blue,’ With David Ayer Directing

The streaming “event series” era hasn’t died, but its opposite is creeping back into the room: durable workplace drama that can become a habit rather than a once-a-year appointment. That’s the lane Milo Ventimiglia is stepping into with HBO Max’sAmerican Blue,” a cop drama pilot with David Ayer attached to direct.

Part of the early framing is pure strategy shorthand. It’s already being framed as a police version of “The Pitt”—less a creative comparison than a tell about what the streamer wants next: another long-running world viewers can drop into regularly, not wait years for, and not have to stay content with just eight episodes.

The premise is classic genre architecture. Ventimiglia (“This is Us”) plays Brian “Milk” Milkovich, a native son returning to Joliet, Illinois, to help stabilize a struggling police force while also chasing personal redemption; the character is described as a quietly determined, natural-born leader looking for a second chance in the place he left behind.

The episode-volume ambition is being sold right alongside the logline. HBO Max’s Sarah Aubrey said the goal is longer seasons that let viewers “sink deeply into this world across multiple episodes.”

The pilot is written and executive-produced by Jeremy Carver (“Being Human”, “Frequency,” and “Doom Patrol”) under his overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, with Brian Udovich and Neil Reynolds also set as executive producers. Ventimiglia co-executive produces, and his producing partner, Russ Cundiff, is listed as a producer.

The David Ayer of it all makes a lot of sense, too. The filmmaker’s spent decades circling cops, corruption, and street-level consequence—writing “Training Day,” “Dark Blue,” and “S.W.A.T.,” and directing “Street Kings” and “End of Watch.”

Warner Bros. Television’s president of creative affairs, Clancy Collins White, pitched the Ventimiglia–Ayer pairing as a tonal match for Carver’s character-driven drama, calling Milo’s “dynamic presence on-screen” and Ayer’s “keen eye” a perfect match.”

For now, it’s a pilot, not a series order. But the intent is clear: a familiar TV lead, a cop-movie lifer behind the camera, and a streamer chasing the stickier, longer-season relationship that made “The Pitt” the reference point in the first place—now translated into a precinct world with different stakes and different scrutiny.
