'Green Lantern Corps': Warner Bros. Gets Aggressive About ‘Lethal Weapon’-Like Superhero Movie

#NeverForget “Green Lantern.” Released after Chrisopher Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ series, the Ryan Reynolds-starring superhero movie was supposed to launch a new DCU franchise and even pivot towards “Justice League,” Superman and more. It was not to be. The movie tanked. Costing $200 million, the film barely cracked that figure worldwide and couldn’t even surpass $116 million at home.

Ryan Reynolds’ career took a hit and it looked like tentpole movies were not in the cards for the actor (how things change…). But Warner Bros. has finally figured out their DC universe even if “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” didn’t start off so hot. Now that “Justice League” is on its way, all the heroes have assembled, minus one: the maligned “Green Lantern” character that WB probably wanted to maintain as much distance from as possible.

Instead, the studio is embarking on “Green Lantern Corps” which will team up all the Green Lanterns in the universe (many of which you saw in the aforementioned turkey of a superhero movie). Apparently WB is hoping to make a “Lethal Weapon”-like film in space (ugh) that centers on Hal Jordan (the character Ryan Reynolds played) and Jon Stewart, an African American Lantern that has never been on screen yet. Model/actor Tyrese has been campaigning to play Jon Stewart for what seems like years and rapper/actor Common has expressed interest too. But it’s very likely the role will go to another actor, perhaps someone on the rise.

WB is so keen on getting the film up and running they’ve hired David S. Goyer, one of the main writers on Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ series and the pen behind “Man Of Steel,” to pen the script with Justin Rhodes (with a story co-conceived by Goyer and DCU chief Geoff Johns). At one point it looked like the DCU films would become the Goyer-verse; he had written the initial draft of “Justice League,” but then Zack Snyder and “Argo” writer Chris Terrio took over, but it looks like he’s back in the game.
