Werner Herzog Making Prehistoric Cave Art Documentary In 3D

Looks like Werner Herzog, of all people, is jumping on the 3D bandwagon.

Roger Ebert broke the news on his blog that our favorite eccentric German filmmaker has been granted permission to film for 3D inside the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc Cave, which contains the earliest cave paintings known to man, dating back 32,000 years.

Ebert also includes two Youtube clips of a brief discussion with Herzog on the state of 3D as well as his experience inside the cave and the passion it awoke in him to shoot the film. This seems like an occasion where the use of 3D is definitely warranted — the cave has been under lockdown to general audiences and this may be the world’s one chance to see these astounding paintings in an inviting and vibrant way. Ok, maybe we’re giving 3D waaay too much credit, but with Herzog behind the camera, color us at least semi-excited. — Mark Zhuravsky
