Marvel’s ‘Moon Knight’: ‘Ramy’ Star May Calamawy Joins Disney+ Series

You’re already going to be getting a glut of Marvel Disney+ content: six shows this year, starting tomorrow with “WandaVision,” but the second wave of Marvel Disney+ series are already in the works. One of those shows on the fast track is “Moon Knight,” starring Oscar Isaac. Today, THR reports that May Calamawy has joined the cast in an unknown role. The actress is probably best known right now for her role on Hulu‘s critically-acclaimed, “Ramy,” which centers on a comedic look at Muslim life in America. She plays the overlooked sister to the lead character.

The Bahrain-born actress is also known for appearing in the TV series, “The Long Road Home” and “The Brave.” Calamawy will be seen next in “Together Together,” starring Ed Helms, which makes its premiere later this month at Sundance.

“Moon Knight” is aiming for a March production start in Budapest, which means we could get more casting announcements soon.

Since his debut in 1975, Moon Knight has appeared in several incarnations over the decades in Marvel comics, including an ex-Marine-turned-mercenary with multiple alter egos (more like a Batman character), to being an Egyptian moon god Khonshu (more of a mystical character), and also a dapper-dressed consultant. Mental illness of multiple personalities is usually a common thread throughout, and the Disney+ limited series expected to borrow from many of these elements.

Directors for “Moon Knight” so far include Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab (the Middle Eastern drama “Clash“), and indie genre directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, known for their sci-fi-ish horror movies like “The Endless” and “Synchronic.”

Jeremy Slater (“The Umbrella Academy“), was hired as head writer and showrunner last November. The series is expected to consist of six episodes. Upcoming “second wave” Marvel series expected in 2022 and beyond include “She-Hulk,” “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special,” “Secret Invasion,” “Armor Wars,” and “Ironheart.” Six Marvel series will debut in 2021: “WandaVision,” “The Falcon And The Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” the animated “What… If?,” “Ms. Marvel” and “Hawkeye.”
