Got a Tip?

Dave Filoni Says He Has An “Exciting Opening” For His ‘Star Wars’ Film & Its Developing At “Normal Pace”

Rosario Dawson, Hayden Christensen, and Lucasfilm Creative Chief Dave Filoni were on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to discuss the “Star Wars” series “Ahsoka” this week (read our review). And while all eyes are on season two of “Ahsoka,” which Filoni says he’s writing, so it’s presumably on the way at some point, many fans are wondering what’s going on with the feature-length film. During “Star Wars” Celebration,  it was announced that Dave Filoni would be directing an untitled “Star Wars” movie—a film many fans are referring to as “Heir To The Empire,” even something Happy Sad Confused jokingly names as well— and well, what’s the status of it? Filoni gave a mild update on it.

“I work in very long threads, and so, telling a story, I always have to know where this is going. What’s the outcome of what’s this going to be?” he explained. “And fans who have followed me know this about my work, about “Clone Wars’ and when ‘Clone Wars’ started, I had a good idea of how it was going to end. It changed a little bit as it went on, but it’s still very relative to the things that happened.”

Filoni added that in the writing of “Ashoka” season two, he’s starting to get a clearer picture of where his feature film is headed—while not official, the movie is expected to tie all of the Disney+ shows, “Ahsoka,” “The Mandalorian” and more into one big culminating movie.

“Because I’ve been writing season two of ‘Ashoka,’ things have clicked and I have a much better about where things are going to go [in this movie],” he continued. “And I will say I have an opening that I really like quite a bit, and I’m very excited about it for that picture. And I’m excited about the potential of the doing of it. But right now, my focus is clearly on [‘Ahsoka’] season two as well as the rest of the galaxy and how it’s spinning.”

Filoni said he’s happy that fans are excited about it, but he also sounds like he’s taking his time. “Right now, it’s one foot in front of the other, and for me, it’s going at its normal development point in the way I make these stories happen.”

The Lucasfilm Creative CEO says he’s also been working with Jon Favreau on his “The Mandalorian & Grogu” film, which is due May 2026, and “all the other things we’re developing,” which sounded like a tease about some of the other movies that are in the works from filmmakers Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (the Rey’ New Jedi Order’ film) and James Mangold (the ‘Dawn of The Jedi’ prequel).

Right now, “Star Wars” on the big screen looks like this:

“The Mandalorian & Grogu”— May 22, 2026

TBD – UNTITLED STAR WARS— December 18, 2026 (thought to be Obaid-Chinoy’s film)

TBD – UNTITLED STAR WARS— December 17, 2027 (which might be a placeholder if/when something is ready)
