It’s been a minute since we heard from Hungarian filmmaker Nimród Antal. After his international debut “Kontrol” proved to be a modest hit, Hollywood came knocking (20007’s “Vacancy” and 2009’s “Armored”), and he was handpicked by Robert Rodriguez to direct the 2010 “Predators” sequel that never really caught fire. Antal’s done work since those movies, obviously, but he’s taking another big shot at global exposure with “Retribution,” a new revenge thriller starring action dad Liam Neeson.

A remake of the Spanish movie “El Desconocido,” which received eight Goya Award nominations when it was released in Spain in 2015, “Retribution” centers on a bank executive who receives a bomb threat while driving his children to school that his car will explode if they stop and get out. Sounds a little like “Speed,” right?
Featuring Neeson as the lead, the action thriller “Retribution” also stars Jack Champion, Lilly Aspell, Matthew Modine, Embeth Davidtz, Arian Moayed from “Succession” and Noma Dumezweni.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Matt Turner (Liam Neeson) is a successful Berlin-based American businessman juggling a booming financial career with family responsibility. Driving his kids to school one morning, Matt receives a phone call from a mysterious voice: there’s a bomb under his seat that will detonate unless he completes a specific series of tasks and fast. Trapped in their car in a high-speed chase across the city, Matt must follow the stranger’s increasingly dangerous instructions in a race against time to protect his family and solve the mystery that plays out over the course of one day. This immersive ticking clock thriller from the producers of NON-STOP and THE COMMUTER straps audiences in for a high-octane ride of redemption and revenge.
A StudioCanal film being distributed by Lionsgate in North America, “Retribution,” is set for release on August 25, 2023. Watch the new trailer below.
