The Yorgos Lanthimos/Emma Stone filmmaking collaboration — five projects deep if you consider the short “Bleat” — continues with the wacky, off-kilter “Bugonia,” a remake of the South Korean film, “Save The Green Planet!,” about a pair of underling conspiracy theorists who kidnap their powerful CEO boss, whom they believe to be an alien.

World premiering at the Venice Film Festival later this summer, “Bugonia” marks the latest in Lanthimos’ now-regular visits to the Lido, following “The Favourite” and “Poor Things,” both of which launched there to great acclaim before becoming awards-season juggernauts. It’s also expected to make the trip to Telluride — the festival lineup to be revealed later today — suggesting a prestige fall rollout very much in keeping with the filmmaker’s recent run of projects.
“Bugonia” also further cements the remarkable, ongoing creative partnership between Lanthimos and Emma Stone. Since first collaborating on “The Favourite” in 2018, the pair have worked together on the short “Bleat,” the Oscar-winning “Poor Things” (for which Stone won an Academy Award), last year’s triptych “Kinds of Kindness,” and now “Bugonia.” Five projects in, Stone has clearly become the filmmaker’s artistic muse, an actress able to slip into his strange, singular rhythms while anchoring his off-kilter worlds with charisma and conviction.
Starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, with Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone, “Bugonia” is directed by Lanthimos from a screenplay by Will Tracy, shot by frequent collaborator Robbie Ryan, and produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Kasia Malipan, and Lanthimos.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Two conspiracy-obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.
Focus Features will release “Bugonia” with a special limited engagement on October 24th, ahead of a wide expansion on October 31st.
