‘Moving On’ Trailer: Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin Are Ex-BFFs Plotting Revenge On A Widower Who Screwed Them Over

Not to be too dismissive or glib, but filmmaker Paul Weitz (“About A Boy,” “In Good Company”) has seemed to find a new lane in recent years. Could you call that lane the “grandma lane” without seeming like a superficial dick? Hear me out, though, because Weitz, who made the film “Grandma” with Lily Tomlin in 2017—which is very good btw!— has been working with her a lot, and several narratives center on women in the ’60s and ’70s. Following his 2013 film “Admission” (2013), in which she co-starred, his latest film, “Moving On,” is his third collaboration with Tomlin.

And “Moving On” seems to tap into Tomlin’s special sauce chemistry with Jane Fonda, a wave they’ve been riding for years. They starred together in the Netflix series, “Grace and Frankie,” they’re together once again in the upcoming film “80 For Brady,” and they starred together in the 2022 standup special “Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin: Ladies Night Live.” Clearly, Weitz knows this duo has clicked together well (on top of their early collaborations like “9 To 5”), and their chemistry is the secret ingredient for his new film.

Written and directed by Weitz, “Moving On” stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, as well as Malcolm McDowell, and Richard Roundtree (“Shaft”). The film centers on two old friends reconnecting at a funeral and deciding to enact revenge on the widower who messed with them decades before.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin star as estranged friends who reunite to seek revenge on the petulant widower (Malcolm McDowell) of their recently deceased best friend. Along the way, Fonda’s character reunites with her great love (Richard Roundtree) as each woman learns to make peace with the past and each other.

Roadside Attractions will release “Moving On” in theaters on March 17, 2023. Watch the new trailer below.
