The legacy of author Tom Clancy‘s famous spy, espionage, and military-science thriller novels is such his name is in the title of Michael B. Jordan‘s latest film, “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse.” Clancy, of course, is the author behind the books adapted for such famous movies like “The Hunt for Red October” (1984), “Patriot Games” (1987), “Clear and Present Danger” (1989), and “The Sum of All Fears” (1991). Amazon‘s “Jack Ryan” series is also based on the character who appeared in many of these films.
And clearly, Amazon likes this series’ success and has doubled down into the Tom Clancy business with “Without Remorse.” The film tells the origin story of action hero John Clark – one of the most popular characters in author Clancy’s Jack Ryan universe. It’s about an elite Navy SEAL (Jordan) who uncovers an international conspiracy while seeking justice for the murder of his pregnant wife; an explosive origin story. And the macho-action subtitle is: They brought war into his house. Now he’s going to make them play by his rules.
The film is directed by Stefano Sollima (“Sicario: Day of the Soldado“), co-written by Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone“), and co-stars Jamie Bell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Luke Mitchell, Jack Kesy, Brett Gelman, Colman Domingo, and Guy Pearce.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, or simply Without Remorse, is an upcoming American action thriller film starring Michael B. Jordan directed by Stefano Sollima and written by Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples. It is based on the 1993 novel of the same name by Tom Clancy and a spin-off of the Jack Ryan film series. The film tells the origin story of John Kelly (aka John Clark), a U.S. Navy SEAL, who uncovers an international conspiracy while seeking justice for the murder of his pregnant wife by Russian soldiers. When Kelly joins forces with fellow SEAL Karen Greer and shadowy CIA agent Robert Ritter, the mission unwittingly exposes a covert plot that threatens to engulf the U.S. and Russia in an all-out war.
“Without Remorse” premieres on Amazon Prime Video on April 30. Surely they have a franchise on the mind, so let’s see how that works out in the future. Watch the final trailer below.
