Sundance 2026 isn’t just about crisis; it’s also about the messy, occasionally euphoric business of starting over. Whether it’s a woman returning to her Texas hometown, a pop star staring down fame’s machinery, or a Cleveland doctor forced to revisit his own choices, these three films chart new lives beginning right where old ones fell apart.
“Chasing Summer”
Directed by Josephine Decker from a script by Iliza Shlesinger, “Chasing Summer” follows Jamie, who, after losing both her job and boyfriend, retreats to her small Texas hometown. There, friends and flings from a fateful high school summer re-emerge and send her life spinning in unexpected directions. The film stars Shlesinger, Garrett Wareing, Lola Tung, Cassidy Freeman, Tom Welling, and Megan Mullally, hinting at a bittersweet collision of nostalgia, regret, and belated coming-of-age.

“The Moment”
In “The Moment,” directed by Aidan Zamiri and co-written with Bertie Brandes, a rising pop star navigates the complexities of fame and industry pressure while preparing for her arena tour debut. The film stars Charli XCX, Rosanna Arquette, Kate Berlant, Jamie Demetriou, Hailey Benton Gates, and Alexander Skarsgård, with Charli XCX and David Hinojosa producing — a meta music-world story about image, control, and who actually owns the “moment” when a star breaks big.

“Carousel”
Written and directed by Rachel Lambert, “Carousel” follows a divorced doctor in Cleveland whose carefully constructed life is upended when his daughter’s debate aspirations and the unexpected return of a past love force him to confront his own choices and embrace the possibility of a second chance. The film stars Chris Pine, Jenny Slate, Abby Ryder Fortson, Sam Waterston, and Katey Sagal, with producers Alex Saks, David Lipper, Robert A. Daly Jr., Ian Gotler, and Pine.

Taken together, these three films capture the Sundance sweet spot: characters at a crossroads, forced to decide whether they’re clinging to the past or finally ready to risk whatever comes next. Expect at least one of them to become the festival’s breakout heart-tugger.
