In first-time filmmaker Cal McMau’s raw and relentless debut “Wasteman,” survival inside a British prison is as much psychological as it is physical. The first trailer for the TIFF 2025 standout teases a brutal, claustrophobic drama centered on one man’s desperate fight for redemption amid a system designed to break him.

David Jonsson stars as Taylor, a long-incarcerated prisoner finally nearing parole after years behind bars — years that cost him his family, his youth, and his relationship with his son. His path to freedom is thrown into chaos when he’s assigned a new cellmate, Dee, played by Tom Blyth, whose unpredictable violence drags Taylor back into the prison’s brutal underworld of rival factions and shifting alliances.
The film also features Alex Hassell, Corin Silva, and Paul Hilton, rounding out a cast that delivers the volatile tension and quiet humanity at the core of McMau’s prison world. As conflicts erupt and loyalties dissolve, “Wasteman” transforms into a study of masculinity and morality under siege.
McMau’s direction captures the suffocating pressure of confinement and the flickering hope of escape, while the leads bring grit and empathy to a story that refuses easy catharsis. With its muscular visual style and emotional precision, “Wasteman” joins the lineage of British prison dramas like “Scum” and “Starred Up,” but with a distinctly contemporary edge.
“Wasteman” marks McMau’s feature debut, establishing him as a bold new voice in British cinema. “Wasteman” opens February 20 in the UK, with a U.S. release date yet to be announced.
