We never thought we’d hear ourselves mutter the words, but you’ve gotta feel just a little bit bad for director McG. Huh? What’s that? Already the butt off all jokes — he’s kind of like the new Brett Ratner –and having failed to quell those snipes with “Terminator Salvation,” the filmmaker just can’t seem to catch a break.
His upcoming film, “This Means War,” is like the new hot potato of film projects. It’s a picture that centers on two spies (one of them Chris Pine) who wage black-ops warfare on each other when they both fall for the same girl (Reese Witherspoon, who’s also producing).
Seth Rogen was offered one of the parts and passed. Justin Timberlake and Colin Farrell’s names came up in connection with the role, but there hasn’t been a peep since. Sam Worthington was offered the role (as he’s offered every male lead these days) and Bradley Cooper (another actor offered everything under the sun) was attached early this year, but he passed because he didn’t think the script was up to snuff (let’s not forget, this project has kicked around for over 10 years and once had Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence starring).
Now Vulture says upcoming superstar in the making Tom Hardy (“Inception” scene-stealer, “Bronson,” “Mad Max 4” star) is taking the role. They’re also saying he’s “replacing” Sam Worthington, but frankly, we don’t think he was ever officially on board other than he was perhaps reading the script and considering it. Vulture says Hardy has “closed” his deal and will star in the picture. Frankly, we’re hoping this news is premature. If not, Tom we love you and know you’re in high demand, but c’mon, you should know better.
Update: this has been confirmed and we’re officially sad.
