Contest: Win Terence Davies' 'Sunset Song' On DVD

Lewis Grassic Gibbon‘s “Sunset Song,” one of the most celebrated Scottish novels of all time, may have a title that evokes something pastoral, but there is darkness lurking between the pages of the book and in the adaptation by Terence Davies. It’s a complex drama about war, small town life, and modern ideals brushing against old school notions of tradition. All of those elements are given room to unfold in the film, and today, we’ve got copies for some lucky readers.

Starring Agnyess Deyn, Peter Mullan, and Kevin Guthrie, the WWI era film tells the coming of age story of Chris Guthrie, a young farm girl forced to face a series of personal hardships. Following the death of their mother, Chris’ brother Will runs away to get married, leaving Chris to tend to the family farm and fend for herself against their abusive father, John. Believing she finally found happiness, Chris marries Ewan, who enlists in the army to fight in The Great War, once again leaving Chris to tend to the family farm and face an uncertain future by herself.
