Now, her story takes center stage in “Love+War,” the latest collaboration from Academy Award-winning duo Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (“Free Solo”). Backed by National Geographic Documentary Films, the documentary presents an unflinching yet intimate portrait of Addario as she navigates war zones, kidnappings, and the challenges of motherhood.

The film world premiered at the Telluride and Toronto International Film Festivals to a lengthy standing ovation, where critics called it “emotional, exhilarating and essential” and “deeply human” (read our review) Since then, “Love+War” has traveled through The Atlantic Festival, Camden, and Calgary, and will continue its festival run at Hamptons, Mill Valley, Woodstock, London, and Hot Springs before release.

Addario’s journey highlights the challenges and costs of frontline journalism. She has been kidnapped twice while on assignment, and every trip into conflict zones forces her to weigh personal risk against the responsibility to bear witness. The film explores her candid struggle between uncompromising work and family, capturing what it means to follow a calling that threatens to endanger everything else in life.

Vasarhelyi frames the film as a tribute: “Her candid struggle to balance her commitments to both her work and her family is one many can relate to. Moreover, Lynsey’s dogged dedication to chronicling the truth in the world’s most dangerous conflicts reveals the profound sacrifices behind the work of journalism and its power to inspire change.” Chin adds, “Her fearless storytelling shines a light on the world’s most challenging conflicts, reminding us why her voice is so vital.”

Produced by Shannon Dill and Anna Barnes for Little Monster Films, “Love+War” continues Vasarhelyi and Chin’s acclaimed collaborations after “Meru,” “The Rescue,” and “Nyad.” Known for merging physical peril with emotional depth, the duo again delivers a film that highlights human resilience while exploring the question of what sacrifices are worth the truth.
