Despite the strange, undeserving box office and awards failure of Damien Chazelle’s “First Man” astronaut movie with Ryan Gosling—a terrific film that should’ve been a solid awards contender—studios don’t seem too scared off by the genre yet. In fact, Gosling is taking another kick at the genre with directors Lord and Miller, AppleTV+ got into the game with their own show “For All Mankind,” and next up, boldly going into the unpredictable field is Netflix. From executive producer Jason Katims, creator Andrew Hinderaker, and showrunner Jessica Goldberg, comes “Away,” an astronaut/first mission to Mars series that debuts in September.
Hilary Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”) stars as Emma Green is an American astronaut and former Navy pilot. She is the commander of the first mission to Mars. She is a headstrong, empathetic, and highly intelligent astronaut and leader. She is married to Matt Logan, a chief engineer at NASA. Emma and Matt have a 15-year-old daughter, Lex.
The show also stars Josh Charles (playing Swank’s husband), Talitha Bateman, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh, Ray Panthaki, Vivian Wu, and Monique Curnen.
The show seems to center on the emotional idea of being away from home— Swank’s character reconciling her decision to leave behind her husband and teenage daughter when they need her the most— juxtaposed next to the thrills of interstellar travel. Here’s the official synopsis:
