'Chiqui' Clip: Colombian Immigrants Try To Find Their American Dream In 1980s New Jersey [Sundance Exclusive]

The 2022 Sundance Film Festival obviously has so much to offer. Big premieres from indie auteurs, world cinema, documentaries, films for kids, and movies that are receiving so much acclaim right now, you’ll be hearing more from them later in the year upon regular theatrical release. And not only has Sundance branched out into television, but its Indie Episodics section continues with its “Indie Episodic Pilot Showcase,” highlighting the best in episodic series work from the independent community.

One of the major titles in that section is “Chiqui,” based on the immigration story of creator/filmmaker Carlos Cardona’s parents trying to make it in the U.S. with the deck culturally, economically, and socially stacked against them in the 1980s. “CHIQUI” stars Brigitte Silva, Sebastián Beltranini, Catherine French, and Gregg Prosser. You can also see Cardona discussing the origin of the project below. More importantly, however, we’re proud to present a new clip from the pilot episode as well.

Here’s the official synopsis:

It’s 1987. Chiqui and Carlos emigrate from Colombia to New Jersey to find a better life for themselves and their unborn son. Upon their arrival, they quickly realize that the American dream is not as easy to achieve as they thought.

Cardona says “Chiqui” is based on his recollections of the stories his parents told him about their immigration to the U.S. in the 1980s when Colombia was closely associated with Pablo Escobar, crime, and the drug trade. And upon their arrival, they quickly realize that the American dream is not as easy to achieve as they thought. “Chiqui” screened at the Sundance Film Festival this past weekend, so check out the clip below and stay tuned to see where the continued story of “Chiqui” pops up next.
