Daisy Ridley Talks Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s “Cool As Sh*t” Story Idea For Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Film

Daisy Ridley may have starred in several films since the last “Star Wars” movie, 2019’s “The Rise Of Starwalker,” but for general audiences she’ll always be Rey. Is that for better or worse? Well, even diehard “Star Wars” fans aren’t thrilled that the heroine is the paternal granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine. Or her “Mary Sue” characterization. Or Rey being the last Jedi in the galaxy. In short, she’s well-liked, but not exactly a fan-favorite, but maybe that’ll change with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy‘s upcoming film.

Obaid-Chinoy’s film sees Rey looking to rebuild the Jedi Order, but plot details remain scarce. Does Ridley have anything new to add about the upcoming project in a recent Variety interview? Kind of. When the outlet asked the actress if she thinks the first female filmmaker of the “Star Wars” franchise will impact the series, Ridley responded, “The short answer is I don’t know. I’m excited to do the job, but not because Sharmeen is a woman. Her documentaries are amazing. Her idea for the story is cool as shit. No spoilers, but she gave me a rundown of the entire story. If it weren’t amazing, I would have been like, ‘OK, call me in five years.’ But it’s worthwhile.”

“Cool as shit” and “worthwhile” are decent enough descriptors for Obaid Chinoy’s story, even if they don’t explain exactly what it is. And Ridley also remained coy on whether some of her “Star Wars” co-stars like Adam DriverJohn Boyega, and Oscar Isaac will return. It’s worth noting that all three actors have expressed desire to move on from the franchise, with Driver confirming late last year he won’t be back as Kylo Ren. But does Ridley have a clue about their potential returns? No, because I don’t know what is what or who is who,” she said. “So much has happened for me [since “The Rise Of Skywalker”]. I feel like a grown-up now. When I first started, I was, like, 20. I was the youngest on set. It took me the first two “Star Wars” films to feel worthy of being there. Now I’m in my 30s. The whole thing feels quite different. I’ve been able to work with other filmmakers, and hopefully, I’ve gotten better as a performer.”

So from the sounds of it, development on Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s “Star War” movie is still in its early stages. The film was supposed to be the first of three new “Star Wars” films announced at Star Wars Celebration last Spring, but plans have changed (not a surprise with Lucasfilm). Now Jon Favreau‘s “The Mandalorian & Grogu” film arrives first on May 22, 2026. As for when Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni, and James Mangold‘s respective “Star Wars” movies come out? Who knows, and expect myriad schedule changes as 2024 goes on.

As for Ridley, catch her next in “Sometimes I Think About Dying,” which hits theaters this weekend.
