A year after it was first announced, there’s an update on Sony‘s “Single White Female” remake starring Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell.

THR reports that the project has both a new screenwriter attached, as well as a new title. Sony taps “Bodies Bodies Bodies” scribe Sarah DeLappe to write the film, a remake of the 1992 film starring Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh. As for the new name? It’s “Single Female,” a contemporary update to the original film’s title. Barbet Schroeder‘s film spelled out the abbreviation in the name of the 1990 potboiler it adapted, “SWF Seeks Same.” Dropping the “white” makes sense, given the remake’s leads, but why not give it a brand new title altogether?
For those unfamiliar with the “Single White Female,” Fonda stars as a woman who rents an open room in her apartment to Leigh, whose behavior becomes increasingly erratic, obsessive, and dangerous. The 1992 film is one of those classic ’90s domestic thrillers, in the same vein as 1991’s “Sleeping With The Enemy” and “The Hand That Rocks The Cradle,” also from 1992. Coincidentally, a remake of the latter, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Maika Monroe, hit Hulu last Fall.
Stacey Sher and Marisa Paiva will produce “Single Female” alongside the remake’s lead actresses. As for a director? There’s still a vacancy there, but any newcomer or journeyman could easily slide behind the camera for a project like this.
Ortega is currently shooting “Wednesday” Season 3 for Netflix, with J.J. Abrams‘ “The Great Beyond“ and Taika Waititi‘s “Klara And The Sun“ in theaters later this year. As for Russell, the “Bones And All” actress is fresh off her stage debut in “The Effect,” with her next onscreen role in Na Hong-jin‘s “Hope“. Russell will also star in Frank Ocean‘s directorial debut opposite David Jonsson.
Stay tuned for more details on “Single Female” as they arrive. Expect a 2027 release for the remake.
