Last summer, Kirsten Dunst joked to Town & Country that she’d love to join the cast of the upcoming “Minecraft Movie‘ sequel for two reasons: 1. her kids loved the movie, and 2. so she could “make a pile of cash.” “Maybe I can just make a where movie where I don’t lose movie?” the “Civil War” actress laughed.
Well, nearly seven months after that interview was published, it looks like Dunst’s “Minecraft” dream has come true. Deadline reports that the actress indeed has a role in the sequel from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, in theaters on July 23, 2027. Dunst joins returning cast members Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge on the picture. As for who she’ll play? That’s under wraps for now.
“A Minecraft Movie” was a box-office phenomenon last Spring, with a near $1B worldwide gross that guaranteed Warner Bros. would greenlight a sequel. And greenlight they did: Jared Hess returns to direct the follow-up, and co-writes the screenplay with Chris Galletta. Producers include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Momoa, and the late Jill Messick. Executive producers include Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy, Brian Mendoza, Jon Berg, and Jonathan Spaihts.
But does a sequel based on a video game sound like a regular Kirsten Dunst vehicle? Not in the slightest, and that’s part of the charm of this casting, along with the actress speaking it into existence. Dunst’s other upcoming roles sound more her speed: a period piece with Sophia Coppola, the thriller “Reptilia” opposite Mikey Madison, Ruben Östlund‘s “The Entertainment System Is Down,” and Flora Birnbaum‘s feature debut, “Self Help.” Recent roles for the actress include “Roofman,” the aforementioned “Civil War,” and Jane Campion‘s “The Power Of The Dog.”
So who else will join Dunst as a newcomer on “A Minecraft Movie 2”? Stay tuned on that, as well as an official title for the sequel, as it inches closer to production.
