‘Star City’: Apple TV’s ‘For All Mankind’ Spinoff Series Follows The Alt-History Space Race From The Soviet Side, Premieres On May 29

For All Mankind” is one of the cornerstones of Apple TV: one of the streamer’s longest-running shows, with five critically acclaimed seasons and a devoted viewership. No surprise, then, that the series’ creators have a spinoff ready to premiere next month, sandwiched in between “For All Mankind” Season 5 and the upcoming final season.

But “Spin City” is an altogether different series, due to its central vantage point. The spinoff takes its title from the nickname of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, the facility where the Soviet Union trained its space mission personnel. And that’s the show’s focus: the professional and intimate lives of the cosmonauts, engineers, and intelligence officers who devoted their lives to sending the USSR into space before the United States.

Here’s an official synopsis for “Star City,” courtesy of Apple TV:

A bold new chapter inspired by the critically acclaimed space-race drama, “For All Mankind,” “Star City” is a propulsive paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race — when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humankind forward.

“Star City” stars Rhys Ifans, Anna Maxwell Martin, Agnes O’Casey, Alice Englert, Solly McLeod, Adam Nagaitis, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Josef Davies, and Priya Kansara.

Ben Nedivi, Matt Wolpert, and Ronald D. Moore serve as creators of “Star City,” with Wolpert and Nedivi as showrunners, too. All three are also executive prouduers, along with Maril Davis, Andrew Chambliss, and Steve Oster. “Star City” is a Sony Pictures Television production for Apple TV.

“Star City” premieres on Apple TV on May 29 with two episodes, followed by one new episodes every Friday through July 10. Watch a trailer for the new series below.
