After two straight box office clunkers in “The Running Man” and “How To Make A Killing,” Glen Powell needs a hit. And with the actor’s new surprise casting that Variety reports, he’ll no doubt get one next week.
The outlet revealed that Powell joins the voice cast of “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” as Fox McCloud, the main character of Nintendo‘s “Star Fox” series. The actor broke the news via Instagram today, and he’ll join an ensemble that includes Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, as well as fellow newcomers Donald Glover, Issa Rae, Luis Guzmán, Benny Safdie, Brie Larson, and Kevin Michael Richardson.
Is Fox McCloud’s arrival in “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” unexpected? Not really. The “Star Fox” hero only ever meshed with “Super Mario” characters in games from the “Super Smash Bros.” series, but the character did appear, just for a moment, in the most recent trailer for the film. But then the roster for the much-anticipated sequel to the 2023 blockbuster has been ever-expanding. Fox McCloud’s inclusion won’t shock diehard Nintendo fans. But an appearance of his co-pilot, Falco Lombardi, or his adversary, Wolf O’Donnell, in the upcoming film may raise some eyebrows.
Other “Smash Bros.” characters making an appearance in “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” include Coptain Olimar from the “Pimkin” series. The latest trailer for the film offers a glimpse of an R.O.B., a real-life accessory for the Nintendo Entertainment System, too. Expect lots more cameos and Nintendo fan service like that sprinkled through the sequel.
As for Powell, his next live-action role on the big screen is in J.J. Abrams‘ “The Great Beyond,” in theaters on November 13.
