The Radio Silence guys have another upcoming project to go alongside “The Mummy 4.” Variety reports that Matt Bettinielli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will helm a “Choose Your Own Adventure” movie for 20th Century Studios. The project will be the duo’s third project with the studio, after 2014’s “Devil’s Due” and 2019’s “Ready Or Not” (distributed under Fox Searchlight, a 20th Century banner).

Millenials and Gen-X-ers will remember “Choose Your Own Adventure” children’s book series, although the franchise is still very much alive today. The series is a collection of nonlinear stories that lets readers select from a variety of narrative options to interact and determine the plot on their own terms. The books were a massive success upon their first release, with a total of 250 million copies of the series sold in their heyday, 1979-1998. And that’s why 20th Century Studios wants to set the movie in that era: to tap into that delicious nostalgia factor.
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett will team up with Tom Bissell to write the screenplay for “Choose Your Own Adventure,” and it remains to be seen whether they’ll adapt a particular popular entry in the book series or pen an original narrative. Whatever the trio chooses, Bissell is a smart match for this project. An author of 11 books, Bissell also co-created the Apple TV+ series remake of “The Mosquito Coast,” and has some video game credits too on the “Gears Of War” and “Uncharted 4” series. Bissell’s familiarity with the serial format and interactive narratives should work well with the many bits of source material Radio Silence will no doubt glean for this film.
But when will “Choose Your Own Adventure” hit theaters? Considering “The Mummy 4” already has a release date, October 15, 2027, don’t expect this one in theaters until 2028. Also expect that sequel to be Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s biggest box-office success to date, surpassing the impressive numbers they tallied on another sequel they helmed from a couple of years ago, “Scream VI.” The pair’s most recent film, another sequel, “Ready Or Not 2,” was a modest success financially; not on par with the numbers of the 2019 original or their “Scream” films, but enough to indicate Radio Silence still puts butts in theater seats.
Stay tuned for more details on “Choose Your Own Adventure” as they arrive.
