Well, that was fast. Just a day after Vanity Fair published their first look at Martin McDonagh‘s upcoming film “Wild Horse 9,” here’s the movie’s first trailer, courtesy of Searchlight. And if it wasn’t already apparent, the trailer confirms that McDonagh’s latest will be more in the vein of previous works like “In Bruges” and “Seven Psychopaths” than “Three Billboards Outside Of Ebbing, Missouri.”
That’s music to the ears of anyone who loves McDonagh’s earlier black comedies. But “Wild Horse 9” has a lot more promise than just that. There’s McDonagh regular Sam Rockwell leading the cast, the exotic locale of Easter Island, John Malkovich back in top acting form, and a tale that, while set in 1973, feels very of the moment in its absurdist take on American intervention and political rot. Mark your calendars, moviegoers: this one may be one of this Fall’s best films.
Here’s an official synopsis for McDonagh’s latest, courtesy of Searchlight Pictures:
Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, CIA agents Chris and Lee are dispatched from Santiago to Easter island by their bureau chief, MJ. Amongst the Island’s iconic statues, and as the longtime partners wrestle with their dark pasts and present conspiracies, Chris’s newfound bond with a pair of rebellious students threatens to send everyone’s trip to this remote paradise sideways.
Along with Malkovich and Rockwell, “Wild Horse 9” also stars Steve Buscemi, Mariana di Girolamo, Ailín Salas, Tom Waits, and Parker Posey.
McDonagh writes and directs “Wild Horse 9,” and also leads producers. Other producers on the film include Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, and Anita Overland.
“Wild Horse 9” hits theaters on November 6. Watch the first trailer for McDonagh’s latest below.
