Iranian director Ashgar Farhadi is done making films in Iran, making 2021’s “A Hero“ the last film he’ll shoot in his native country. Now, the follow-up to that one is ready for its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month: “Parallel Tales,” a remake of one of the most beloved works of contemporary European cinema.
Set in the aftermath of the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, “Parallel Tales” sees Farhadi update Krzysztof Kieślowski‘s “Dekalog: Six” to the (relatively) present day. Isabelle Huppert stars as Sylvie, a novelist who, out of inspiration for her next work, starts to follow the comings-and-goings of her neighbors across the street. But when Sylvie hires Adam to help with everyday chores, her observations bring unexpected consequences to her and her neighbors’ lives, as well as as her writing.
According to executive producer Maciej Musial, there are plans to remake all ten segments of Kieślowski’s “Dekalog,” with the next, Lee Chang-dong‘s “Possible Love,” already in post-production. That all but guarantees a Fall festival premiere for that one; stay tuned on which “Dekalog” segment will get remade next.
Along with Huppert, “Parallel Tales” also stars Virginie Efira, Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, Adam Bessa, Catherine Deneuve, and India Hair.
Farhadi also co-writes “Parallel Tales” with Massoumeh Lahidji to go along with directing. Producers on the film include Gaëtan David, Asghar Farhadi, David Levine, André Logie, Alexandre Mallet-Guy, and Andrea Occhipinti. Memento Films distributes the picture in France.
Take a look at the French trailer and some images for Farhadi’s latest below. As noted earlier, “Parallel Tales” has its world premiere in the main competition of Cannes in May; stay tuned for a premiere date.
